Susannah Heschel

"The Civil Rights movement was a balm that helped to heal Jewish souls after the Holocaust. It made us proud of being Jewish in so many ways. It gave us a sense that we have something to stand for. And we did."

Susannah Heschel is the Eli M. Black Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College and a Guggenheim Fellow. A leading scholar of 19th–20th century Jewish and Protestant thought, she is known for her work on Jewish-Christian relations, the history of antisemitism, and interfaith theology.

Her books include The Aryan Jesus and Abraham Geiger and the Jewish Jesus, and she has edited the writings of her father, Abraham Joshua Heschel—widely regarded as one of the most significant Jewish thinkers of the 20th century.

Her scholarship bridges historical trauma and moral vision, while advancing dialogue across traditions.
