At the Threshold

The Team

Director's Statement

Theology may be one of the most ambitious and misunderstood forms of inquiry—rooted in tradition, shaped by lived experience, and capable of generating insight into the world and our place in it. Across disciplines and traditions, theology continues to evolve, yet it is often absent from public view. AT THE THRESHOLD is a film series that makes theological inquiry visible—as a living practice that is rigorous, contested, human, and vital.

Our approach is to situate religious inquiry within lived experience. We aim to widen its accessibility without diminishing its depth, showing how theological questions emerge from and return to the lives of those who ask them. These films do not ask you to convert or agree, but they will open you to a vast world of longing, vision, and witness.

Christopher Brewer

Executive Producer / Original Series Co-Creator

Christopher Brewer

Christopher R. Brewer was a theologian, creator, curator, and friend whose life reflected a rare integration of intellectual courage, aesthetic wonder, and moral depth.

A former Program Officer at Templeton Religion Trust and Principal Advisor in his final years, Christopher led some of Templeton’s most imaginative initiatives, including Art Seeking Understanding and the early development of At the Threshold, a global documentary series on theology. He also served as Editor-in-Chief of GiffordLectures.org, expanding access to over a century of public philosophy and theology.

Holding four degrees in theology, including a Ph.D. in Divinity from the University of St Andrews, Christopher’s scholarly work centered on natural theology, sacramentality, and the arts. He was editor or co-editor of seven academic volumes—Christian Theology and the Transformation of Natural Religion among them—with several more forthcoming. He completed his first authored book, Understanding Natural Theology (Zondervan Academic, 2026) immediately before illness interrupted his work.

Prior to his scholarly and philanthropic endeavors, Christopher worked as a marketing manager for a Fortune 500 company—an early sign of his uniquely interdisciplinary path. His life was as full of questions as it was of devotion, and he brought both rigor and reverence to his work, his family, and his many friendships. Christopher lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with his wife Rachel, their two sons, John and Samuel, and their cheeky poodle, Charley.
